SAE Magnetics Announces Optical Modules for Use with Intel's Light Peak Technology

SAE Magnetics today announced its collaboration with Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) on Light Peak technology unveiled this Sep 23 at the Intel Development Forum.

SAE Magnetics, a wholly owned subsidiary of TDK Corporation, announced today that it has early versions of optical module available that can be used with Intels Light Peak technology. Each SAE optical product is capable of driving 2 Light Peak ports, each of which is operating at 10Gb/s. At this speed, a full-length Blu-Ray movie can be transmitted in less than 30 seconds. The low-cost, low-power consumption, and small-form-factor features allow simultaneous connection of electronic devices to each other over a single cable at higher speed. Light Peak also has the ability to run multiple protocols simultaneously over a single cable, enabling the technology to connect devices such as peripherals, workstations, displays, disk drives, docking stations, and more.

Intel is pleased to be working with SAE Magnetics to make Light Peak optical components ready to ship in 2010, said Jason Ziller, Director, Optical I/O Program Office, Intel Corp. Light Peak has high bandwidth and the ability to run multiple I/O protocols over a single cable, enabling the technology to connect to many devices such as displays, disk drives, peripherals, and docking stations.

SAE Magnetics will be offering both the 10Gb/s optical modules for Light Peak as well as a fiber-lens harness for connecting optical modules to the Light Peak ports. Samples and production quantities of both optical modules and fiber-lens harness are available now through SAE. For contact, please write to enquiry@sae.com.hk.
